Women’s Economic Empowerment in the Tourism Sector of the Indian Ocean Rim Region

Date: Friday, 28 May 2021

Time: 11:00 AM GMT +4 Mauritius/UAE time

As part of the Australian Government funded project on Promoting Women’s Economic Empowerment in the Indian Ocean Rim, and in collaboration with the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), UN Women is producing a series of webinars on the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs). The WEPs are a set of seven principles that offer guidance to businesses on how to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in the workplace, marketplace and community.

It is estimated that women comprise the majority of the global tourism workforce (54%). This trend is also evident in the Indian Ocean Rim region. Unfortunately, women in this sector have been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, given their majority in the workforce and the fact that they are often concentrated in low-skilled or informal work with less access to social protection. Nevertheless, the sector continues to offer significant potential for advancing women’s economic empowerment.

This webinar will showcase best practices amongst companies in the tourism sector in the Indian Ocean Rim region in promoting women's economic empowerment and gender equality. Guest speakers will include Velma Corcoran, Regional Lead for Middle East Africa at Airbnb in South Africa and Sara King, the General Manager of Purpose at Intrepid Travel in Australia.

The project’s WEPs webinar series is ideally suited for IORA government counterparts and Working Group members, current and potential WEPs signatories from the region, representatives of Chambers of Commerce, women’s business associations, NGOs, entrepreneurs and any other interested individuals from IORA Member States or Dialogue Partners. However, registration is open to any interested individuals, particularly from the tourism sector.
