As an umbrella body for financial institutions licensed and supervised by the Central Bank, the Uganda Bankers’ Association (UBA) plays a pivotal role in shaping the financial sector and expanding access to finance for women and women-led enterprises. UBA launched the Women Economic Empowerment Initiative (WEEI) in 2023 and signed the WEPs in 2025. However, among UBA’s 34 member institutions, only 3 institutions have signed the WEPs, highlighting the urgent need to accelerate adoption and institutionalize gender equality practices across the financial sector. UBA is committed to playing a catalytic role in mobilizing member institutions, influencing sector-wide standards, and expanding access to finance for women and women-led businesses. While UBA’s commitment to the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) marks an important step forward, this must now be translated into tangible institutional change, measurable action, and strengthened accountability mechanisms, working in close collaboration and with the support of various key partners.
